Zazen is Zen meditation practice, just as exactly, Zen is the practice of zazen and the continuation of the mind of zazen in daily life. But what is zazen?
- A posture of the body
– There are many possible ways of sitting in a stable and balanced way – see the image below for some of those ways
- A posture of attention
– During zazen, one let’s one’s attention fall on posture and breath. Follow the path o the breathing within your body. Paying full attention to body and the coming and going of breath inevitably brings us back to this present moment.
- A posture of the mind
This is of course the essential point. It’s not a question of trying to empty the mind, but of not grasping on to the thoughts and processes . When we concentrate on our posture and breath, it’s possible to put the mind at a distance. This attitude is called “letting thoughts pass”, as we do when we watch the clouds in the sky.
